Binding length, strip count and fabric to buy.

In short

Binding length is the quilt perimeter plus 10 to 12 in (25 to 30 cm) for joins and corners. A 60 x 70 in throw with 2 1/2 in double fold binding needs 270 in of binding: 7 strips cut across the fabric, 17 1/2 in of fabric, so buy 1/2 yd.

How to use it

  1. Enter your finished quilt size.
  2. Choose your strip width. 2 1/2 in (6.5 cm) is the classic double fold.
  3. Cut the strips across the width of fabric and join them with diagonal seams.

Pip's tips

  • Join strips with 45 degree seams pressed open so the joins melt into the edge.
  • Use bias binding for curved or scalloped edges. It glides around curves beautifully.
  • Stop 1/4 in (0.75 cm) from each corner for crisp mitred corners.
