Quilt backing calculator

Backing size and yardage, with the smartest seam direction.

In short

Cut backing 4 in (10 cm) larger than the quilt top on every side for longarm quilting, or 2 to 3 in (5 to 8 cm) for domestic quilting. A 60 x 70 in throw needs a 68 x 78 in backing: two panels with a horizontal seam, 3 7/8 yd of 42 in fabric.

Colorful patchwork quilt on a rustic bed frame amidst lush greenery, ideal for cozy outdoor scenes.

Pip's tips

  • Trim off the selvages before seaming and press backing seams open for a flat finish.
  • Many longarm quilters love horizontal seams that run parallel to the rollers. Ask yours.
  • Batting is cut to the same size as the backing.
